Haifa Carmelit Underground Funicular – Replacement of main cable

posted in: Haifa, Israel

The “Carmelit” is Haifa’s underground funicular, linking the lower city (“Downtown”) at sea level and the Carmel Center at 274 meters above sea level, across 6 stations and along 2 Kilometers. In July 2015, the main cable of the system was replaced. The old cable was pulled out from the tunnel through the lower station area in Paris Square, and the new cable was pulled into the tunnel from the upper station in Gan Haem – Carmel Center. Watch a video and still photos of the process.
