Hiking Kasern Italy – Birnlücke Pass – Krimmler Tauernhaus Austria

posted in: West Europe

A beautiful day hike crossing the Alps from Italy to Austria through the Birnlücke pass.

The hike starts at the peaceful village of Kasern (Casere) in Ahrntal (Valle Aurina) Südtirol Italy at 1,595m. A nice path leads to the beautiful restaurant at Kehrer Alm, then starts to climb through a magical alpine valley towards Birnlückenhütte (Rifugio Tridentina) at 2,441m, where the view of Dreiherrnspitze (3,499m) dominates the skyline. After a rest in the hut, a short climb leads to Birnlücke Pass at 2,665m. From the pass, a hike down is possible through the snow patch or a the rocky trail towards Innerkeesalm and Krimmler Tauernhaus on the Austrian side.

The hike was done as a return trip after the Alpine Peace Crossing from Krimml to Kasern through the Krimmler Tauernpass, commemorating the cross of 5,000 Jewish refugees back in 1947.
