Hiking Krimml Tauern Pass – Following the footsteps of post WWII Jewish refugees

posted in: West Europe

The hike from Krimml in Austria towards Kasern in Italy through the Krimmler Tauern pass, is one of the finest in this area of the alps. While walking on this trail, we found out that we are following a remarkable historical event.

In 1947, following World War II, 5,000 Jewish refugees crossed the 2,634 meters pass on their way to freedom from East Europe through Austria and Italy to the Land of Israel. They had to take this difficult path to avoid those who tried to stop them from arriving to the promised land.

Nowadays, seven memorial signs along the route tell the story of these refugees and the people who led and helped them along the way.

Since 2007, an annual hiking event called “Alpine Peace Crossing” takes place around June, to commemorate these events. The hike is dedicated to all refugees, all over the world.

For more information and historical background it is highly recommended to visit the  “Alpine Peace Crossing” Website.

Here are the hiking photos telling the story…
