During the summer icebergs in the lagoon create magnificent formations. It is one of the most touristic sights in Iceland, and a photographers delight. Most tourists visit the lagoon during the day, stay for a couple of hours, some take a boat tour, but rarely spend the whole day in the site.

When I arrived at the lagoon I was immediately captivated by its enchanting sight, and decided to spend the night on its shores. Experiencing Jökulsárlón for more than 24 consecutive hours added an inevitable dimension to the experience – time, and revealed one of its fabulous features – the effect of the tides. It was the first time I witnessed a full cycle of two high tides and two low tides in a day, and their amazing effect on the movement of icebergs.

The following film presents 24 hours of Jökulsárlón, showing the two daily tide cycles. Note how icebergs are carried to the ocean twice a day, during low tides. It also shows the unique fauna of the lake as well as inspiring ice formations.

Here are some photos from Jökulsárlón

Here is a general sight of the glacial lagoon

ngg_shortcode_0_placeholder

A long walk along the eastern shores enables a better view to the icecap and the glacier

ngg_shortcode_1_placeholder

During the day, we can enjoy the sights of magnificent icebergs detaching from Vatnajökull into the lagoon

ngg_shortcode_2_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_3_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_4_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_5_placeholder

During the afternoon number of tourists decreases, and Jökulsárlón becomes calm and tranquil

ngg_shortcode_6_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_7_placeholder

It is a great time to enjoy the ice formations

ngg_shortcode_8_placeholder

Let’s zoom in…

ngg_shortcode_9_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_10_placeholder

Or zoom out to ice formations with a sunset backdrop

ngg_shortcode_11_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_12_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_13_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_14_placeholder

Birds enjoy some quality time

ngg_shortcode_15_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_16_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_17_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_18_placeholder

… next day brings charming early morning sights

ngg_shortcode_19_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_20_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_21_placeholder
ngg_shortcode_22_placeholder

A unique 24 hours look into Jökulsárlón – a magical glacial lagoon in south east Iceland.
