Ladakh (“Land of high passes”) is a region situated in north India in the Great Himalayas mountain range area. It is one of the most sparsely populated regions of the Indian subcontinent. Ladakh is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and culture. Historically it was a Buddhist kingdom, and the strong Tibetan influence gave it the nickname “Little Tibet”. Ladakh is a high altitude desert as the Himalayas create a rain shadow, denying entry to monsoon clouds. The main source of water is the winter snowfall on the mountains. The Indus river forms the backbone of Ladakh. The extreme terrain and climate, as well as the unique way of life developed in Ladakh, form a magical magnet to travelers.
